San Diego History

The photographs.

Every historical photograph we have gathered, including the whole of Picturesque San Diego, 1887. Each one carries its caption and the record it came from.

The Downtown Waterfront

There was a Japanese neighborhood built out over the water, and in 1942 it was emptied in six days.

Behind the Van Camp cannery, at the foot of Crosby Street, San Diego had a neighborhood standing on pilings over the bay. The Journal of San Diego History describes it plainly. "In back of the cannery over the waters of the bay were the homes of many of the Nikkei who were involved in the tuna industry." Children grew up out there. Donald Estes names some of them: Osa Himaka, Masato Asakawa, Haruki Koba, a boy called Lefty Okomoto, watched over by older fishermen like Namiki San as they "lived, worked and played on the wharf over the bay."

La Jolla

A woman spent ten years building a pool so children could swim safely. The seals have it now.

Ellen Browning Scripps was in her eighties when she started. She had lived in La Jolla since 1897, and she had watched the cove take people. The article of record on the project quotes the problem plainly: a rapid cross current, and an ocean that had "taken toll of human life" more than once. Scripps put it in her own terms. "I have always had an innate interest in children, particularly those handicapped in life's game."

Bankers Hill and Uptown

San Diego had cable cars, and the men who built them were running the bank that killed them.

San Diego had cable cars. Real ones, gripping a moving cable under the street, the same machinery San Francisco is famous for. They opened in June 1890 with the governor of California riding in the first car.

National City

The Pacific end of the Santa Fe was National City, and they got it by moving a piece of track in the night.

The first transcontinental train on the Santa Fe route did not leave from downtown San Diego. It left from a two story wood building on what is now West 23rd Street in National City, and that building is still standing.

Del Mar

The road is named for a man who never owned a share of the place.

The road into the Del Mar Fairgrounds is Jimmy Durante Boulevard. The turf course inside is the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. The state of California lists the property's official address as 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

Coronado and North Island

North Island was an island, and the Navy filled the channel with the bay.

You can drive onto North Island. For most of its history you could not, because there was water in the way.

Solana Beach

The gap in the bluff at Solana Beach was cut with a fire hose.

There is a notch in the sandstone bluff at Solana Beach that everyone walks down to get to the sand. It looks like the ocean made it.

Palomar Mountain

San Diego County built a road around the turning radius of one piece of glass.

The road up the south side of Palomar Mountain is county route S6. People drive it every weekend without knowing that its curves are the shape they are because of the dimensions of a mirror.

Rancho Santa Fe

A railroad planted a forest here for lumber. It got Rancho Santa Fe instead.

The name sounds like a Spanish land grant. It came off a subdivision map.

Julian

The building called the Julian Hotel is not the Julian Hotel.

The two story frame building on Main Street in Julian that takes guests under the name Julian Hotel was built in 1897 and it was not called that for the first twenty four years of its life. It was the Hotel Robinson. It was built by Albert Robinson, who the San Diego History Center records as a formerly enslaved person from Missouri, and his wife Margaret, who ran it.

Ocean Beach

There was a fifty foot wooden bridge from Ocean Beach to Mission Beach.

From 1915 to 1950 you could get from Ocean Beach to Mission Beach without going inland. You rode a streetcar over the water.

Oceanside and the San Luis Rey Valley

The oldest pepper tree in California came off a ship.

In 1830 a sailor up from Peru handed over some seeds at Mission San Luis Rey, and Father Antonio Peyri planted them. The mission's own account of it is plain. "The first pepper trees in Alta California were planted by Fr. Antonio Peyri using seeds brought to San Luis Rey in 1830 by a sailor from Peru." The mission says the tree standing in its quadrangle today is the oldest living pepper tree in California.

Sherman Heights and Golden Hill

A San Diego neighborhood cost eighty dollars.

In June 1867 Matthew Sherman bought a hundred and sixty acres of San Diego from the City Trustees at fifty cents an acre. Two years later he subdivided it, and in November 1869 the San Diego Union carried his lot sales at an average of a hundred dollars apiece. One lot paid for the whole tract and left him twenty dollars ahead. The ground is still called Sherman Heights.

Campo and the Mountain Empire

The Army put its last cavalry post at Campo, and the county record says why.

In 1941 the United States Army built a cavalry post sixty miles southeast of San Diego, in a valley at Campo with almost nobody in it. By the end of the war nearly three thousand Black soldiers were stationed there, on horseback, patrolling the border.

A 1943 United States Army map headed Camp Lockett, Campo, California, showing two separate cantonment areas, stable rows and the road and rail lines through the valley

Middletown and Uptown

A San Diego neighborhood was platted in 1850 and nobody built on it for seventy years.

Middletown was surveyed, subdivided into streets and blocks, and drawn on paper in 1850. That is seventeen years before Alonzo Horton bought the land that became downtown. The City of San Diego's own historic context statement says it plainly: the tract "predated even Horton's Addition."

San Diego in 1887

Picturesque San Diego, 1887

Douglas Gunn published Picturesque San Diego in 1887. Seventy two photogravures, every one from a photograph taken by Herve Friend in a single month, March 1887. Seventy one are shown here. Plates 53 and 55 are the same view of the Babcock and Story wharves, printed twice, so the second one is left out. The captions are transcribed off the plates themselves rather than from the book's index, which is wrong in several places. One credit line covers all of them.
